Frequently Asked Questions

About Electrolysis
What is electrolysis, and is it permanent?
Electrolysis is a method of permanent hair removal that uses a small electrical current to destroy the cells responsible for hair growth. Each follicle is treated individually, and once a follicle has been successfully treated, it can no longer produce hair.
Multiple sessions are typically needed to achieve lasting results.
How is electrolysis different from laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal uses light energy to target hair pigment and generally provides permanent hair reduction. Electrolysis treats individual follicles and can achieve permanent hair removal regardless of hair color.
Unlike laser, electrolysis can treat blonde, red, gray, and white hairs and is suitable for all skin tones. It can also be performed on tattooed skin and, in many cases, scar tissue, making it a versatile option for permanent hair removal.
What areas can be treated?
Electrolysis can be performed on many areas of the face and body, including the upper lip, chin, neck, eyebrows, chest, abdomen, and genital areas.
Treatment suitability and any area-specific considerations can be discussed during your consultation.
Gender-Affirming Hair Removal
Do you offer gender-affirming electrolysis?
Absolutely! KMNK Beauty proudly provides gender-affirming electrolysis for transgender, nonbinary, and gender-diverse clients.
Whether you're seeking facial or body hair removal, preparing for gender-affirming surgery, or working toward your personal goals, we're here to provide a welcoming, respectful, and supportive experience.
Do you offer electrolysis for vaginoplasty preparation?
Yes! Preoperative hair removal for vaginoplasty is one of our specialties. We have experience supporting clients throughout their hair removal journey and up to their surgical procedures.
We're familiar with the treatment diagrams and hair removal requirements used by several Wisconsin surgeons, including those in Milwaukee and Madison. If your surgeon has provided specific instructions, we'll use those to guide your treatment.
If you haven't selected a surgeon yet, that's perfectly fine! We can begin with areas commonly required for vaginoplasty preparation and adjust your treatment plan as your surgical goals become clearer.
How far in advance should I begin electrolysis before surgery?
We recommend starting as early as possible. Preoperative electrolysis typically requires multiple sessions over many months because of natural hair growth cycles.
Your timeline will depend on hair density, treatment progress, and your surgeon's requirements. We can discuss your goals and surgical timeline during your consultation.
Treatment & Preparation
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments varies depending on the treatment area, hair density, hormonal influences, previous hair removal methods, and individual growth cycles.
Because hair grows in cycles, multiple sessions are necessary to treat hairs as they become available. Some follicles may also require more than one treatment.
Does electrolysis hurt?
Everyone experiences electrolysis differently. Most clients describe a brief sensation of heat, tingling, or a small pinch.
We work together to find treatment settings that balance effectiveness with your comfort.
What should I expect after treatment?
Temporary redness, mild swelling, and skin sensitivity are common after electrolysis and generally subside as the skin heals.
We'll provide aftercare instructions to help support proper healing and minimize irritation.
Do I need a consultation before starting treatment?
Yes! We begin with a 30-minute consultation to discuss your goals, evaluate the treatment area, and answer your questions.
Your consultation includes approximately 15 minutes of electrolysis so you can experience treatment firsthand and we can begin identifying comfortable, effective settings.
Consultations cost $20, which is fully credited toward your first booked treatment session.
How should I prepare for my appointment?
Please arrive with approximately 1/8–1/4 inch of visible hair growth in the area to be treated. The hair should be long enough to see and grasp with tweezers.
Avoid tweezing, waxing, threading, or epilating before treatment. Shaving and trimming are fine between appointments as long as sufficient visible growth is present when you arrive.
Scheduling & Policies
How do I schedule an appointment?
Appointments are available by request and require approval before they are confirmed.
Scheduling requests are reviewed during business hours and must be submitted by the end of the preceding business day. Your appointment is not confirmed until you receive a confirmation notice.
What if there are no appointments available?
You can join our Shared Waitlist to be contacted when an opening becomes available.
You may select Kamella, Rinca, or No Preference as your preferred provider. Joining the waitlist does not guarantee an appointment or a specific timeframe.
Can I schedule recurring appointments?
We do our best to accommodate consistent appointment times for clients receiving ongoing treatment. However, recurring times are not guaranteed, and occasional scheduling adjustments may be necessary.
What is your cancellation and rescheduling policy?
Cancellations or rescheduling requests made within 48 hours of your appointment are subject to a fee equal to 50% of the scheduled session price. No-shows are subject to a fee equal to 100% of the scheduled session price.
Exceptions may be made for emergencies at the practitioner's discretion.
You can cancel or reschedule using the self-service link in your appointment confirmation email. You're welcome to contact your electrologist directly, but messages may not be reviewed immediately.
